The Pennfield High School varsity girls’ basketball team opened MHSAA district tournament play on Monday evening at Hastings High School against Eaton Rapids. The Lady Panthers led throughout the game and survived a fourth quarter comeback attempt by the Greyhounds to prevail by the score of 39-36. Pennfield improved to 7-12 overall and advances to the semifinals on Wednesday night where they will play Charlotte High School.
Pennfield led 8-6 after the first quarter and built that lead to 21-14 at halftime. They continued to lead 32-26 after three quarters, only to see Eaton Rapids rally late to tie the game with just over a minute to go in regulation. However, senior, point guard Abby Schwartz calmly sank two free throws to seize the lead back for the Lady Panthers and then added two more free throws after a Pennfield defensive stop, to preserve the quarterfinal victory.
Leading the scoring for the Lady Panthers were Schwartz and sophomore, guard, Kaylee Glidden who each scored 14 points. Glidden also led the team with 9 rebounds. Senior, Ellie Noffsinger contributed 6 points and 4 assists and junior, Kylie Crandall added 5 points and collected 7 rebounds on the evening.
The semifinals will again be held at Hastings High School on March 24th with the 5:30pm game featuring the host Saxons against Olivet High School. The nightcap will be Pennfield and Charlotte High School beginning at approximately 7:30pm. The winners will advance to the MHSAA district championship on Friday, March 26th at Hastings HS beginning at 7:00pm.
