The Pennfield High School varsity boys’ basketball team closed out it’s regular season on Saturday afternoon with a home game against non-conference foe Coloma High School. It was Senior Day at Pennfield but it was junior, guard Aiden Burns who provided the biggest splash, by making a school record (10) 3-point field goals in the contest on his way to a career high 36 point outburst. With this victory the Panthers improved to 15-2 overall on the season.
Pennfield also had plenty of contributions from their seniors. Point guard Ryne Petersen scored 11 points and add a game high 10 assists. Senior, forward Shawn Gardner added 9 points and 8 rebounds on the afternoon, and senior, forward, Gavin Liggett scored 8 points and collected 7 rebounds.
The Panthers led 21-19 after one quarter of action and 42-38 at the halftime intermission. They built the lead to 58-52 after three quarters and built the lead to double digits early in the fourth, only to see Coloma cut into that lead late in the fourth quarter. Pennfield preserved the victory at the free throw line in the final minute.
The varsity boys’ basketball team will open MHSAA district tournament action on Thursday, March 25th as the number one seed, when they play I-8 rival Harper Creek in the semi-final round. Game time is scheduled for 5:30pm at Eaton Rapids High School.
