The Pennfield High School varsity boys’ basketball team traveled to arch-rival Harper Creek High School for the MHSAA district tournament semi-finals on Wednesday night and the Panthers prevailed in a double overtime thriller 53-51. Pennfield improves to 15-7 overall and will advance to the district championship game on Friday, March 13th at 7:00pm.
Pennfield fell behind 16-8 after the first quarter and trailed 27-21 at halftime. They closed the gap to 33-31 after three quarters of play. The fourth quarter and overtime periods were close throughout and filled with excitement before the Panthers ultimately survived and advanced. Sophomore, guards Aiden Burns and Luke Davis led the way with 21 points and 17 points respectively. Both players hit big three point shots late in the game to lift Pennfield to the victory, Burns ended the night with 6 three point baskets. Junior, forward, Shawn Gardner pulled down a game high 11 rebounds on the night.
The varsity boys’ basketball team will take on another familiar rival in I-8 foe Marshall High School on Friday night. Game time is set for 7:00pm at Harper Creek High School.
