The Pennfield High School varsity boys’ basketball team opened MHSAA district tournament action last night at Harper Creek High School against a familiar foe in I-8 rival Western High School. Pennfield had narrowly defeated Western twice during the regular season and the third time proved to be no different, as the Pennfield advanced with a 53-51 victory.
Pennfield led the entire game until just over a minute remaining, when Western took a 51-50 lead. After a Pennfield free throw tied the game, Western failed to score on their ensuing possession and the Panthers rebounded and called timeout to set up a last second opportunity. Junior, point guard, Ryne Petersen scored on a driving lay-up with just under seven seconds to go to win it for Pennfield as Western’s desperation shot missed at the buzzer. Sophomore, guard, Luke Davis led Pennfield with 23 points, while Petersen added 20 points and 5 steals.
Pennfield advances to play host Harper Creek on Wednesday, March 11th in one semifinal game at 7:30pm. In the early game, Marshall High School will play Michigan Center at 6:00pm. The winners will meet for the MHSAA district championship on Friday, March 13th at 7:00pm.
