Panthers News · Hall of Fame Class of 2019 Announced ……


The Pennfield High School Athletic Hall of Fame Board of Trustees have announced the Hall of Fame Class of 2019.  The new inductees include Matthew Higgs (’94), Bill Johnson (’70), Nick Koenigsknecht (coach), Aaron Nasers (’02), and Richard Sheffer (community member).  These individuals will be honored during the Hall of Fame weekend activities scheduled for October 4-5, 2019.

Matthew Higgs was a three sport student-athlete.  He earned varsity letters in football, wrestling and baseball.  He earned All-State honors in wrestling three times, was a state qualifier four times and was a conference champion four times.  He was a member of the state championship team in 1992.  We was voted best wrestler in school history by the Battle Creek Enquirer.

Bill Johnson was a five sport student-athlete.  He earned 11 varsity letters in football, cross country, basketball, baseball, and golf.  He was a state qualifier in golf, he was Honorable Mention All-State in baseball, and the captain of the basketball team at Pennfield.  After graduation he went on to play men’s college volleyball on scholarship at Ball State University.  He was named conference MVP at Ball State and led the team to the NCAA tournament.

Nick Koenigsknecht was the head football coach at Pennfield High School from 1999-2013.  He had an overall record of 130-34 as head coach and had 15 winning seasons and 15 playoff appearances.  He led his team to nine (KVA) league titles and four district championships.  He was named MHSAA Regional Coach of the Year in 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2011, and 20013.

Aaron Nasers was a three sport student-athlete.  He earned 12 varsity letters in cross country, track, and soccer.  He earned All-State honors in track three times and captured first place at the state meet in the 1600m and 800m run.  He set the school records in both of these events.  He earned All-State in cross country in 2001.  He finished in 2nd place at the Division III state meet that year.  After graduation he attended the University of Nebraska and Western Michigan University.

Richard Sheffer was the clock operator for football and boys and girls basketball at Pennfield from 1970-2016.  He was recognized by the Pennfield Athletic Boosters for 30 years of support with the middle school basketball tournament held at Pennfield from 1971-2001.  He also coached several middle school teams for many years and junior varsity baseball from 1971-1977.

The Hall of Fame selection committee chose these five people to join the prestigious club of former Pennfield High School student-athletes, coaches, and community members who have represented the athletic department at Pennfield High School in extraordinary ways through the years.  The Athletic Hall of Fame began in 2015.
