Haley Hooper and James Ruoff Win MHSAA Individual State Bowling Championships

Pennfield High School sophomores Haley Hooper and James Ruoff both captured the MHSAA Individual State Championships in Division 3 Girls and Boys Bowling on Saturday, March 4th at M-66 Bowl.  According to the MHSAA this is the first time student-athletes from the same school have both won individual state championships in bowling in the same season.

In the girls competition, Haley Hooper entered as the #16 seed to start the match play format.  In the match play rounds each competitor bowled two games.  In her first round match she defeated the #1 seed 371-301.  In her second round match, she defeated the #9 seed 334-321 to advance to the semifinals.  There she defeated the #13 seed 383-361 to advance to the state championship match.  In the finals, Haley defeated the #7 seed by the score of 399-325 to win the title.

In the boys competition, James Ruoff entered as the #15 seed to start the match play format.  In his first round match, he knocked off the #2 seed 416-313.  In the second round he defeated the #10 seed 440-396 to move into the semifinal round.  There he defeated the #11 seed 380-350 to advance to the state championship match.  In the finals, James defeated the #4 seed 395-349 to win the title.

The boy’s bowling team also had senior Max Jackson and junior Sean Young qualify for match play format.
